Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse - Dark Night of the Soul (2009 @ 192Kbps)

Fuck my ass!!! What the hell a forgotten indie-rocker from the late 90s has to do with the most successful and in-demand producers of the 00s? Well, to create a masterpiece!! And you wanna know who's with 'em? Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas, Gruff Rhys, David Lynch, Frank Black, Wayne Coyne, Nina Persson, any many more.. A legal matter with EMI delayed the release of the album, and they are currently just selling the case with a blank CD-R.. Pretty ahead of their time you gotta admit!
enjoy!

Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics

Mulatu Astatke, the father of Ethio-jazz music, and Stones Throw/Now Again Records' Heliocentrics joined forces and recorded an album for Strut Records' Inspiration Information series.

The Heliocentrics have already released an album called "Out There", which i personally find really nice.

The new record is called "Inspiration Information Vol. 3" and u can download it here.

By the way, The Heliocentrics & Mulatu Astatke are going to appear live at Synch festival this summer in Athens, Greece.
Untill then, Stones Throw has a couple of videos of them playing live.

Word on the street is that also Madlib will play live at the same festival, although nothing has been officially announced.

.....yet!

PLJ Band - Armageddon (@256kb)

In 1982 PLJ Band released "Armageddon", an album considered to be among the best ever produced in Greece. The lyrics were inspired by the Apocalypse of John, just as in the legendary "666" by Aphrodite's Child about 11 years earlier. Never the less the lyrics were found blasphemous and offensive to god and the christian orthodox church and the copies had to be destroyed.. No comments about that. Some of them survived though and right now the original copy is very rare. There's been a cd release and a vinyl reissue by Anazitisi Records though.

PLJ Band consisted of Laurentis Macheristas (lead vox, 12-string guitar & keyboards), Antonis Mijelos (lead & acoustic guitars), Pavlos Kikrilis (rhuthm & acoustic guitars), Jimmy Vasalakos (bass, backing vox) and Tolis Skamajouras (drums, percussion). They later reached commercial success under the name "Termites", when they began writing their lyrics in greek. The lead singer Laurentis Macheritsas started a solo career in 1989, after the band's breakup.

Gangbangin'

After "Dogtown & Z-Boys" and "Riding Giants" (huge movies on my opinion), Z-boy Stacy Peralta is going away from themes such skateboarding and surfing and he's directing the documentary "Crips and Bloods: Made in America". It's a film about the two infamous L.A. gangs.

Forest Whitaker is the narrator and NBA superstar Baron Davis is a member of the production team.

Dunno if the movie is going to be released in Greece (probably not), but is already out in theaters in the U.S.

Here are some linx for further info on the movie, the Crips, the Bloods and street gangs in general.

And since this blog is about the music, i might as well add that members of the two gangs got together, auditioned and finally released a record called "Banging On Wax", as Bloods & Crips, in 1993. The following year they released another record, "Banging On Wax 2... The Saga Continues".

The second one is not that good, so i'll only provide y'all with "Banging On Wax" (@ 192kbps).

It's just another average west coast gangsta rap record, with late '70s and '80s funk samples etc.. Only these guys first killed and then sang, not the other way round..

Funny useless info: I believe the label that released the records is called Quality (ha ha).

Both Styles: Country & Western

Here's some southern stuff!! Seems like the right time, with all the tractors and the pick-ups on the highway... They mix great with tobacco (preferably chewing) and whiskey (pronounced whĕ-ské). Cool music to listen to while traveling, eh, don't know, across USA maybe!

First one is the North Mississippi All Stars, a jam band from... North Mississippi actually and their Electric Blue Watermelon from 2005 (here, @320Kbps).

Next it's 67-year-old Seasick Steve, formerly a farmer worker, hobo, cowboy, touring guitarist, recording engineer and more, and his 2008 album, I Started Out With Nothin and I Still Got Most of it Left (here, @256Kbps). Epic title.

That's all for now! Cheers!!

Locomotiv GT - Boldog Vagyok/Ha Volna Szived (1971 7"Vinyl Rip @ 320Kbps)

Happy new year to everyone. It's been a while.
Let's hope that 2009 will give us new & old
music for us, and you, to listen and groove to.

This first post for the new year is a single by
Locomotiv GT, a Hungarian Psychedelic/Prog
band from the early seventies. No CD reissues
as far as i know, so you have to settle with the
sound of vinyl. This is their first single from
1971.

Enjoy!
